Research interests

Stefan's past research interests have included performance practice in the classical and romantic eras, neurological and neuro-linguistic programming, music leadership and management. Over the past decade, Stefan's research has focused on cognitive and metacognitive learning-teaching processes, summative and formative assessment in musical performance.  His research interests and expertise lies in: 

  • mixed methods research design approaches 
  • teacher and student instructional and assessment practices
  • student & teacher motivation & sources of motivation (contextual factors) 
  • self-regulation of learning and formative assessment principles, and how these can enhance the learning process and outcomes
  • assessment motivation
  • student & teacher self-reflection
  • assessment analytics (standards, teacher judgment, moderation techniques, formative & summative forms)
  • educational reform and accountability
  • initial & continuing teacher education
  • teacher professional learning, professional development & practice
  • music performance.
